Caring for Your Hair Extensions

How to Care for 100% Remy Hair Extensions (Keep Them Soft, Shiny, and Long-Lasting)

Investing in 100% Remy hair extensions means you’re getting the highest quality hair available.  Hair that is cuticle-aligned, ultra-soft, and designed to last. But like anything premium, proper care is what keeps them looking flawless.

Whether you’re wearing Tape-ins, Genius Wefts, Butterfly Wefts or our Vixen Elite Pony™, here’s exactly how to maintain your extensions so they stay smooth, tangle-free, and beautiful for months.

1. Wash Gently (Less Is More)

Overwashing is one of the fastest ways to dry out extensions.

  • Wash 1–2 times per week (or as needed)

  • Use a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo

  • Always wash in a downward motion—never scrub or bunch the hair

Pro tip: Focus shampoo on the scalp (for installed extensions) and let it gently run through the lengths.

2. Condition Like You Mean It

Extensions don’t receive natural oils from your scalp, so hydration is everything.

For extra longevity, add a deep conditioning mask once per week: we recommend

Pureology Hydrate Hair Treatment Mask

3. Brush the Right Way

Improper brushing = shedding + breakage.

Never brush wet hair unless you’re using a wide-tooth comb very gently.

4. Be Smart with Heat Styling

The good news: Remy hair can be curled, straightened, and styled just like your natural hair.

But heat damage is still real.

  • Always use a heat protectant

  • Keep tools under 350°F–375°F

  • Avoid excessive daily heat styling

Pro tip: Extensions hold style longer than natural hair, use that to your advantage and style less often.

5. Sleep & Lifestyle Care

A lot of damage happens when you’re not paying attention, especially at night.

  • Sleep in a loose braid or ponytail

  • Use a silk or satin pillowcase

  • Never go to bed with wet hair

  • Use a silk bonnet for sleeping

For workouts or windy conditions, tie hair back to prevent tangling.

6. Protect Your Investment from Damage

Certain environments can shorten the lifespan of your extensions.

  • Chlorine & saltwater: Always rinse immediately after swimming

  • Sunscreen: Avoid direct contact (it can discolor lighter shades)

  • Alcohol-based products: These dry out the hair quickly

7. Maintenance & Reuse

One of the biggest advantages of high-quality Remy hair is reusability.

  • Tape-ins: move up every 6–8 weeks

  • Wefts: move up every 6–10 weeks

  • With proper care, extensions can last 9–12 months
